The Bodhisattva's Jubilation
Order Study Retreat
The Bodhisattva’s jubilation
Here we will look into the significance and precious nature of Going for Refuge to the Three Jewels. We will explore three short texts taken from the Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana respectively.
The three texts are:
The Bimbisara Sutta from the Pali Canon
The section on Jubilation from the Perfection of Wisdom in 8000 lines
A section from the Heart Treasure of the Enlightened ones
(verse section from Patrul Rinpoche’s 'Letter to a Friend' commentary by Dilgo Khyentse)
The Bimbisara Sutta is descriptive of the goal, the deathless, in context of Shakyan/Kosalese society at the time of the Buddha. The section on Jubilation is a classic Mahayana contemplation on the significance of all who have ever Gone for Refuge in relation to the Bodhisattva’s appreciative awareness. Patrul Rinpoche’s letter touches the core of devotion as expressive of undifferentiated mind, symbolised by the body, speech and mind of Avaloketesvara, the heart essence of all the yidams, the spontaneous manifestation of the play of form in emptiness..
